This is NOT my final report regarding GCA’s 2023 Christmas Party for the kids in Mexico. That will come later. In the meantime, I need your help.
To paraphrase Charles Dickens, this year’s party was the best of times and the worst of times. It was the best of times because we shattered attendance records. It was the worst of times, however, for the same reason. Let me explain.
We never know how many children and families will attend the party. Our previous record was 600 children and their families. That was in 2019 before Covid. In 2020, we did not have the party. In 2021 and 2022, the numbers started going back up.
I predicted that this year we would have 600 to 700 children at the party expecting to receive a toy. When we had collected 700 toys, I figured we were golden. However, my estimate was off by a whopping 200 kids! We ended up running out of toys when there were still 200 kids in the toy line. (We also fed 1,500 meals, which is at least 300 more than we have ever served before.)
I decided that no child that had been at the party would be left out, and promised to bring additional toys to them before Christmas. Like Santa, I made a list and checked it twice. I also ran out of toys for the children at Campo Colonet, the migrant camp we help every year.
This is where you come in. Can you help us bridge the gap by donating additional toys? I have updated the Amazon Wish List called, “Christmas in Mexico 2023.” Please click the link below and help us by purchasing toys. They will come to me and I will make sure they get distributed to the kids on our list.
